SoftBank Group Stock (9984): Price, Board Talking Points and Outlook

By: WEEX|2026/07/19 18:41:49

SoftBank Group (TSE: 9984) is a Japanese investment holding company chaired and led by Masayoshi Son — and the first thing to get right is that it is a different company from SoftBank Corp (9434), the listed telecom carrier. SoftBank Group is one of the world's largest AI investors, pouring capital into OpenAI and Arm. In 2026 the stock roughly quadrupled off its April low into June, then fell in July, dropping 9.01% on July 17. Retail boards debate the discount to net asset value (NAV), Son's leverage strategy, and OpenAI concentration risk. This page summarizes the board talking points as of July 2026, the business and AI position, and how to read the stock.

Board and community talking points

SoftBank Group's board text is not directly fetchable, so the themes below are the retail concerns as reported in the press and observed around the board as of July 2026.

  • The NAV discount. The market cap trades below the net asset value of its holdings, and Son calls the stock a "bargain." The discount is said to have narrowed from over 50% toward roughly 17-35% through 2026, but that reading moves over time.
  • OpenAI concentration and IPO-timing risk. On the July 1 report of the second tranche closing, the ADR fell 4.52%, with investors citing concentration and timing — a directly observed negative reaction.
  • Fear of Son's "all-in" leverage. A bridge loan, margin loans, and asset sales frame a bear case of reflexive leverage into one AI bet. These are observed views, not our recommendation.

The business and the AI/semiconductor cycle

SoftBank Group (9984) is a TSE Prime-listed investment holding company with a March fiscal year-end. FY3/2026 delivered revenue of ¥7,798.7 billion (+7.7%) and net income attributable to owners of ¥5,002.3 billion (+333.7%) — but that surge is driven largely by mark-to-market gains on OpenAI and Arm, not cash operating profit.

The core AI bet is OpenAI. On February 27, 2026, SoftBank signed a definitive agreement to invest a follow-on USD 30.0 billion (about ¥4,674.3 billion) in OpenAI via SoftBank Vision Fund 2, at a $730 billion pre-money valuation, in preferred shares that convert to common on an IPO. The money comes in three tranches of $10 billion each: the first closed April 1, 2026, the second closed July 1, and the third is planned for October 1. On completion, cumulative OpenAI investment reaches USD 64.6 billion (over ¥10 trillion) and ownership about 13%.

Leverage funds the bet. Around March 2026 SoftBank arranged a roughly $40 billion unsecured bridge loan (to be repaid by March 2027) and sold its Nvidia and T-Mobile stakes. It also negotiated a margin loan backed by its OpenAI shares, cutting the target from $10 billion to about $6 billion, and those talks are reported to have stalled. The other AI engine is Arm: SoftBank owns about 90% of Arm Holdings (NASDAQ: ARM), up roughly 197% in 2026 on AI-chip demand, and a core investor in the roughly $500 billion "Stargate" US AI-datacenter build — so these bets are interlocked.

How to read the stock

SoftBank Group did a 1-for-4 forward split effective January 1, 2026, so every price here is split-adjusted. The shares bottomed near ¥3,507 on March 23, 2026, rallied in the April AI melt-up, and reached a close-basis peak of ¥8,632 on June 2 (a closing peak; intraday or all-time highs may differ). After recovering to ¥6,574 on July 14, they slid 3.3% on July 15, 6.3% on July 16, and 9.01% on July 17 (to ¥5,424) — about 17.5% in three days, as reports that the roughly $6 billion OpenAI-backed margin loan had snagged met the broad AI/semiconductor correction.

Bulls see levered exposure to two of the best AI assets — OpenAI at $730 billion pre-money and Arm up 197% — with a persistent NAV discount reading as "cheap AI," Stargate optionality, and buybacks. Bears point to the $40 billion bridge due March 2027, margin-loan dependence, OpenAI concentration, IPO-timing risk, and reflexive downside when AI sentiment turns (as July 17 showed). This page sets no price target. Q1 (April-June) results are expected around August 6-7, 2026 (confirm the date on company IR).

Trading AI-theme exposure on WEEX

The AI theme SoftBank Group embodies shows up globally across AI names. To own SoftBank Group shares themselves, the standard route is a Japanese brokerage account. On WEEX you can instead trade USDT-M perpetual futures referencing AI names: contracts referencing Anthropic (ANTHROPICUSDT, up to 20x) and OpenAI (OPENAIUSDT, up to 50x) both listed on April 14, 2026, alongside perpetual futures referencing AI names such as Palantir (PLTR), Nebius (NBIS) and Zhipu (Z.ai).

One point matters here to avoid confusion. SoftBank Group actually owns OpenAI equity (preferred shares), but WEEX's OPENAIUSDT is a wholly separate, independent derivative with no connection to that stake — it is not SoftBank Group's holding, nor a proxy for it. And Anthropic and OpenAI are privately held; these are not the shares themselves but derivatives (perpetual futures) that track an exchange-published price index. Perpetual futures are leveraged, move sharply, and can produce losses exceeding your initial margin, so trade only with a full understanding of the risks. See the WEEX market listings. WEEX does not offer Japanese single stocks or any proxy for them, including SoftBank Group or any tokenized version of it; it offers crypto assets and derivatives like these.
