U.S. House Passes Bill to Restrict Stock Trading by Lawmakers
On July 23, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act, which restricts members of Congress and their families from trading stocks. The vote resulted in 232 in favor and 198 against. This bill is the first congressional stock trading ban to be voted on in a full House meeting, receiving support from 13 Democratic lawmakers. Although the bill passed, some Democrats believe it lacks sufficient strength, as it does not include provisions for the mandatory sale of existing holdings. Another bill requiring lawmakers and their families to sell their personally held stocks garnered broader bipartisan support but failed to advance to a full House vote. The bill will now be submitted to the Senate for consideration.
