KOSPI-NASDAQ Correlation Reaches Highest in 5 Years, Impact of AI Investment
The investment boom in artificial intelligence (AI) is closely linking the South Korean and U.S. stock markets. The correlation coefficient between the KOSPI and the NASDAQ 100 index has recently risen to 0.50 over 60 trading days, marking the highest level since 2021. Raelian Global Advisors analyzed that investments in data centers by U.S. big tech companies and the demand for memory semiconductors are directly affecting the performance of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. As AI facility investments are directly related to the profitability of South Korean semiconductor companies, the synchronization of the two indices is strengthening. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix account for more than half of the KOSPI's market capitalization, and their stock prices are sensitive to AI investment sentiment. The proportion of DRAM demand for data centers has increased from 40% last year to over 50% recently. As concerns about a slowdown in AI facility investment spread, SK Hynix's stock price fell by 13% in a short period, and after fluctuations in South Korean semiconductor stocks, major tech and semiconductor stocks in the U.S. market also declined. The South Korean stock market closes before the U.S. market, serving as a leading indicator that reflects AI-related investment sentiment in advance. However, there are also concerns that as the synchronization between the two markets deepens, the benefits of diversification may weaken.
