Fixed-term deposits continue to stagnate: what you earn by investing $1,200,000

The traditional fixed-term deposit remains one of the most chosen savings tools by savers, although its yield is still far from the levels it offered months ago. Following successive changes in the monetary policy of the Central Bank and the deregulation of minimum rates for deposits, each financial institution freely sets the interest it pays to its clients, which generates significant differences between banks and also between operations carried out at branches and through electronic channels.

In this scenario, those looking to preserve the value of their savings often compare the yield of fixed-term deposits with other short-term options, such as mutual funds or virtual wallets that pay interest on the available balance. The choice depends not only on the offered rate but also on liquidity, as fixed-term deposits require locking in the money for the entire agreed period.

During the first half of 2026, the rates paid for fixed-term deposits continued to adjust to the new economic scenario. After the high levels recorded during 2024 and part of 2025, yields began to gradually decline as inflation showed a slowdown and the Central Bank reduced its monetary policy rate.

The elimination of the mandatory minimum rate for deposits led each bank to adopt its own commercial strategy. Some private entities decided to offer more competitive yields to attract new clients, while others maintained more conservative rates.

As a result, today there are differences of several percentage points between banks for the same fixed-term deposit of 30 days. Therefore, before investing, it is advisable to consult the simulator of each entity or use the comparators published by the Central Bank, which allow knowing the current rates for clients and non-clients.

In the case of the Banco Nación, an investment of $1,200,000 for 30 days offers different results depending on the channel chosen to establish the deposit.

If made at a branch:

  • the entity pays a Nominal Annual Rate (TNA) of 15.50%, with a profit of $15,287.68.

On the other hand, if the fixed-term deposit is established through electronic means:

  • the TNA rises to 19% and the yield increases to $18,739.72.

The comparison between traditional fixed-term deposits and virtual wallets has become increasingly common. While the bank deposit guarantees a fixed rate from the moment of establishment, wallets usually invest the money in mutual funds, whose yield can vary daily.

The main advantage of the fixed-term deposit is predictability. The saver knows from the beginning how much they will receive at maturity, and the yield does not change even if the market fluctuates during those 30 days. Digital wallets, on the other hand, offer immediate availability of funds. The funds can be used for payments or transfers at any time without needing to wait for the maturity of an investment.

However, the yield of interest-bearing accounts depends on the daily evolution of mutual funds and is not guaranteed. It can be above or below the rate of a fixed-term deposit, depending on market conditions.

Before deciding where to invest, it is important to consider the savings objective. If the money will not be used for a month and one seeks to know exactly how much will be obtained at maturity, the fixed-term deposit remains a simple and low-risk alternative. If, on the other hand, the priority is to maintain immediate availability of funds, digital wallets may offer greater flexibility.
