EU Considers Lifting the 21st Sanctions Package Against Russia

The European Union is seeking a resolution regarding the 21st sanctions package against Russia, with negotiations stalled due to disagreements over restrictions on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) and oil price caps. Three scenarios are being considered: a 24-month transition period for winding down operations, a complete removal of the LNG restrictions, or the cancellation of the entire sanctions package. Greece opposes the ban on the transshipment of Russian LNG to third countries, which also complicates negotiations. EU countries have softened plans to impose entry bans on Russian ex-combatants and rejected a proposal to limit imports of certain types of fish. The issue of price caps on Russian oil remains unresolved, with the price cap frozen at $44.10 per barrel until July 23. EU ambassadors will meet this week to discuss a compromise solution.
