Ethereum Reserves Decline on Exchanges, but Demand Lags Behind
Ethereum reserves on exchanges continue to dwindle, while an increasingly significant portion of the supply remains locked in staking. This dual dynamic is gradually tightening the liquidity available in the market and reinforcing the scenario of a supply squeeze, an supply shock that could impact price formation. As ETH attempts to hold around $1,900, on-chain data reveals a fundamental shift that could redefine the balance between buyers and sellers in the coming weeks.
In Brief
- The ETH staking rate has reached a peak of 33.6%, locking an increasing share of the monetary mass out of trading circuits.
- ETH reserves on centralized platforms have dropped to 15.1 million ETH, driven by regular net withdrawals (~46,300 ETH).
- This contraction in liquidity persists during both rising and falling price periods, confirming a long-term liquidity withdrawal.
- Scarcity alone is not enough to trigger a price surge; the market still lacks sustained spot demand and institutional inflows.
The Mechanical Drying Up of Ethereum Liquidity in the Spot Market
Analysis of on-chain metrics confirms a structural and accelerated contraction of the immediately available Ethereum supply for trading. Recent data published by CryptoQuant reveals several key indicators:
- The surge in ETH 2.0 staking: the staking rate has crossed a new threshold to settle at around 33.6%, marking a spectacular increase from the 28% recorded at the beginning of 2025;
- The drop in reserves on exchanges: ETH reserves held across all centralized exchange platforms have undergone a drastic decline, falling from a peak of over 21 million ETH to about 15.1 million ETH;
- Negative net flows on platforms: recent net flows on exchanges remain negative at around -46,300 ETH, reflecting withdrawals that far exceed deposits;
- Ongoing positive inflows to staking: incoming flows to the staking protocol remain positive at approximately +62,200 ETH, although this pace is significantly below the episodic peaks observed earlier in the period.
This joint movement of withdrawals from platforms and orientation towards staking is not merely a short-term speculative fluctuation. The decline in reserves on exchanges has indeed persisted uninterrupted through both price increases and correction phases. According to CryptoQuant analysts, this persistence reflects a structural reduction in the immediately accessible supply rather than a fleeting withdrawal cycle. The combined effect of these flows creates a fundamentally constructive signal for Ethereum's medium-term supply profile. More tokens are entering the staking contract while an increasingly reduced amount remains stationed on exchange platforms, restricting the amount of ETH awaiting sale in the secondary market.
The Imperative for Real Demand
While the scarcity of tokens is undeniable from an accounting perspective, the mechanics of pricing obey a more complex logic where supply restriction produces no effect without buying pressure. As CryptoQuant experts point out, a simple reduction in supply is not enough to provoke a price squeeze. To drive up the price, there must still be sustained demand in the spot market, more robust network activity, or incoming flows from institutional investors.
Despite a rebound in price towards $1,900, the market has yet to demonstrate the necessary buying intensity to convert this liquidity decline into a decisive bullish breakout. The mere scarcity of tokens alone cannot guarantee a significant upward movement in the absence of an external catalyst to stimulate spot trading volume.
Analysis of network activity and institutional flows shows that buyer enthusiasm remains moderate at this stage. Even though the continued withdrawal of reserves provides a favorable base, diminished liquidity can increase volatility without establishing a clear direction. Without fresh capital injection into the spot market or a resurgence in the use of decentralized applications, the scarcity of circulating money is likely to remain a passive factor, unable to drive the market upward on its own.
Critical Thresholds
Short-term evolution remains suspended on the confirmation by the price of the reality of this drying up. Thus, the immediate bias remains moderately constructive as long as the draining of exchange platform reserves continues at the current pace. However, analysts warn that the theoretical realization of the supply shock will depend on strict technical breakouts in the spot market: a sustained price level above $2,000 would reinforce the hypothesis of a supply squeeze, while a return of incoming flows to exchange platforms would weaken it.
The validation or refutation of the bullish scenario for Ethereum will therefore depend on the ability of the cryptocurrency price to surpass this psychological threshold or, conversely, on the detrimental return of deposit flows to exchange platforms.
If institutional investors or a resurgence in application activity fuel spot demand, the thin order book depth on exchanges could accelerate Ether's price increase dramatically. Conversely, if demand remains apathetic or if incoming flows to exchange platforms regain dominance, the supply squeeze thesis will reduce to a mere theoretical illusion.
