"Beyond Wallets to On-Chain Finance"... Exilist Highlights MEW's Tokenized Stock Expansion Strategy
MyEtherWallet (MEW) is evolving from a simple wallet to a comprehensive asset management interface by prominently featuring "tokenized stocks" and on-chain finance. According to Exilist research, MEW started as an Ethereum (ETH) wallet interface in 2015 and has since expanded into mobile wallets, browser wallets, and portfolio management services. Recently, it has begun supporting "tokenized stocks" based on Ondo Stocks, broadening the intersection between traditional finance and on-chain finance.
MEW: From Ethereum Wallet to On-Chain Finance Gateway After 10 Years
This information is based on an AMA featuring Katya Michaels, MEW's Head of Content and Community. According to Exilist, Katya has been active at MEW since 2018, where she explained the company's growth history, service expansion strategy, and the background for introducing tokenized stocks.
MEW began in 2015, shortly after the launch of the Ethereum mainnet, as a web interface designed so that anyone could create an Ethereum wallet and manage assets without command line input. During the ICO boom from 2016 to 2018, it quickly spread as a leading wallet supporting virtually all Ethereum-based tokens.
In 2018, MEW launched a mobile wallet, and in 2019, it revamped its web interface to be more beginner-friendly. In 2020, it rapidly introduced Ethereum staking support and gradually expanded DeFi and Layer 2 functionalities. In 2022, it launched the cross-chain browser wallet "Encrypto," further broadening its support. Now, it has expanded its functionalities beyond Ethereum to include Bitcoin (BTC), Solana (SOL), real assets, tokenized stocks, and perpetual futures.
Non-Custodial Principles and Open Source Structure as Key Competitiveness
Katya pointed to three principles—open source, client-side, and non-custodial—as the background for MEW's long-term trust. This means that users directly hold their private keys and asset control. Unlike exchanges or centralized platforms, this minimizes risks of account freezes or asset custody.
In fact, MEW has grown organically without external investment, avoiding being swayed by specific investor interests, and has maintained a direction of not collecting personally identifiable user data. This philosophy contrasts with the trend of many wallet services moving towards user tracking or centralized account-based models. Katya emphasized that with the addition of the ability to manage both tokenized stocks and cryptocurrencies in one wallet, users can directly control a broader range of assets.
Allowing Existing Wallet Connections: A User Journey-Centric Strategy
MEW does not insist on using only its own wallet. It supports an open structure that allows users to connect existing wallets like MetaMask and OKX Wallet to trade directly within the MEW portfolio. This is a "Bring Your Own Wallet" strategy, designed for users to utilize MEW's functionalities while maintaining their existing wallet environment.
Katya explained that this approach is an extension of the initial mission that everyone should have access to blockchain, regardless of technical level or region. The aggressive expansion of hardware wallet support in the past aligns with this context. In fact, for some assets, MEW was the only platform where Ledger or Trezor users could manage their holdings.
This is more about providing practical access tools at points where different user environments and demands arise than simply increasing user numbers. The recent integration of real assets and tokenized stocks can also be understood in this context.
Tokenized Stocks: Bringing U.S. Stock Accessibility On-Chain
The background for MEW adopting tokenized stocks as a key service lies in global investment accessibility issues. Katya pointed out that U.S. stocks are assets that many users find difficult to access due to country-specific regulations, minimum investment amounts, complex paperwork, and processing delays. In contrast, tokenized stocks can lower these entry barriers and provide more immediate exposure to the U.S. market, according to MEW's assessment.
Additionally, the ability to manage relatively stable and historically long-standing stocks alongside crypto assets in one wallet is a differentiating factor. Users can build a more diversified on-chain portfolio beyond a cryptocurrency-centric one. Unlike traditional securities accounts, tokenized stocks held on a self-custody basis could potentially be used as collateral or liquidity assets in future DeFi applications.
Why Ondo Stocks? Understanding the Structure Comes First
In the tokenized stock market, several players are competing alongside Ondo Stocks. Nevertheless, Katya cited the "first mover" advantage and accumulated experience as reasons for MEW prioritizing support for Ondo Stocks. There is trust in the operators who have led the tokenization trend from the beginning.
However, Katya clarified that not all tokenized assets share the same structure. Some products may not be backed by actual stocks, and some ecosystems may have low liquidity, leading to significant slippage. Additionally, some products may have closed operational structures, while others may adopt more permissionless forms. Ultimately, from the user's perspective, it is important to understand how assets are issued, stored, and circulated rather than just focusing on names. Relevant details can be confirmed through Exilist research.
The Purpose of Reward Campaigns: Transforming Experiences
Currently, MEW is running campaigns like Trade & Hold, Trade & Get, and Layer3 missions, where users can earn rewards by directly experiencing the products. While it may superficially appear as a marketing event, the core goal is to allow users to have the experience of holding stocks in their own wallets.
Katya expressed a desire for users to feel how simple the process of converting crypto to tokenized stocks is and how cryptocurrencies and stocks can coexist within one portfolio. The experience of accessing the U.S. stock market with just a few clicks without going through a separate brokerage is particularly intuitive for crypto-native users.
The structure requiring a certain period of asset holding also implies a message to explore the service and asset model thoroughly rather than just focusing on short-term rewards. This aligns with the awareness that the tokenization of real assets could fundamentally change portfolio composition methods in the long term.
Considering the Korean Market: The Next Step for Wallets is an Integrated Financial Interface
MEW envisions that wallets will become a key interface connecting traditional finance and on-chain finance, moving beyond mere storage tools. Katya anticipates a future where users can build a complete on-chain portfolio with various assets like crypto and stocks within their wallets. To achieve this, MEW aims to be a familiar, easy, and secure tool.
In terms of functionality, it has recently added perpetual futures to its web platform and announced the upcoming launch of a mobile version. It is also exploring deeper integration of DeFi functionalities within the wallet. Regarding the Korean market, MEW mentioned the complete localization of the MEW wallet and educational content into Korean as a priority task. At the same time, it expressed a desire to hear directly from Korean users about what features they want and what aspects they find inconvenient.
This AMA is significant not only as a simple service introduction but also as it demonstrates actual use scenarios of on-chain finance combining tokenized stocks and self-custody. With 10 years of experience as an Ethereum wallet, MEW is now redefining the role of cryptocurrency wallets and shifting its focus to a user sovereignty-based asset management platform. The next competition in on-chain finance seems likely to revolve around connecting more assets more naturally rather than merely accumulating them.
